This guide shows you, step by step, how to install your first crypto wallet and get it ready to receive your first coins.
I’ll use Exodus as the example. It’s user friendly and good for beginners. No tech jargon. Just simple, careful instructions you can follow today. All you need is your mobile phone and a notebook.
Why a mobile wallet?
A mobile wallet lets you control your own crypto keys on your phone, at all time and anywhere you want. It’s handy for small amounts and day-to-day use and for beginners to start. Remember: for long-term savings, a hardware (cold) wallet is safer. Don’t worry, we will look at this later or in my classes.
Treat the mobile wallet like the cash in your purse — useful, but not where you keep everything. And more importantly: if it’s gone, it’s gone!
Before you start — a few important rules
- Always test with a very small amount first (for example, €1-2) before sending larger sums.
- Only download apps from the official App Store / Google Play or the wallet’s official website. https://www.exodus.com
- Never share your 12/24 recovery words with anyone. Not by message, email, or photo.
- Write your recovery phrase on paper, twice, and store it safely offline.
A few extra beginner tips (saves you headaches)
- Always check the network. If we are sending Bitcoin, we are using the Bitcoin network. If we are sending Solana, we are using the Solana network. Using the Bitcoin network could result in permanent loss. Imagine them being specific motorways and each only runs on their own specific motorways. Complicated? I know. - Create your paper backup and make at least 2 copies of them. Keep one in a safe if possible. Laminate them if you can.
- Keep app updated

Now let’s go step-by-step:
- Download the app to your phone
Go to App Store or Google Play. Search for Exodus Wallet by Exodus Movement, Inc. and install. Find the EXACT one. - Create your wallet
Open the app → choose Create New Wallet → set a PIN. You can set a pin later also. - Write down your recovery phrase. For this you need to go to “Settings” then “Backups” and then “Secret Key”. Then Exodus shows you 12 secret words. Write them on your notebook and keep them in a safe place. Never take a screenshot or share them online. This is the most important about recovery phrases. You never have them connect anywhere online and never give them out.
- Find your receive address
Open one currency, for example Bitcoin. Many common ones are preinstalled in your wallet. Tap Receive (e.g., Bitcoin) → copy the address or show the QR code. - Test with a small amount
Send €1 worth of crypto to your wallet or let your friend send you something. Once you see it arrive, you’re ready to receive more.
Final note from me to you
Installing a wallet is one of the most empowering steps you can take. It gives you real control over your money. It’s okay to feel cautious — that caution will protect you if you follow the steps. When you’re ready, I’ll walk you through hardware wallets next, so you can keep your long-term savings extra safe.
Alternatives to Exodus are Trust Wallet for example or Atomic Wallet, Blue Wallet etc.. Do a thorough research before you trust any wallet you just stumble upon online. Better be safe than sorry and use the most common ones only. I can’t give you any guarantee that the links used here will remain safe forever.
